One invented season

How a competition decides who goes through

Leagues, groups, knockouts, two-legged ties and play-offs each settle progress differently. This site follows one made-up season through all five, so every rule can be seen working on real-looking numbers.

The Harbour Cup, from quarter-finals to final

The eight quarter-finalists came out of the group stage. Three ties were level after 90 minutes: one settled in extra time, two on penalties. Violet FC won the final.

Five stages, five ways to decide

  1. 1. League Points and tie-breakers
  2. 2. Groups Who goes through
  3. 3. Knockout One match, one winner
  4. 4. Two legs Aggregate and level ties
  5. 5. Play-off A second route up

Why the details matter

A result written as “2–1” can mean a win in 90 minutes or a win after extra time, and a level score can still end with one side going through on penalties. Which rule applies is set by each competition's own regulations, and those can differ. These pages show the arithmetic of each rule on invented games, not the rules of any real competition.
