How an invented season decides who goes through

Stage 3 · Knockout

One match, one winner

In a single-match knockout tie someone has to go through on the day. The invented Harbour Cup uses three steps: 90 minutes, then 30 minutes of extra time if the score is level, then penalties if it is still level.

Three quarter-finals, three ways to finish

  • Topaz FC2 — goes through
  • Maroon FC1

Decided in 90 minutes

90 minutes 2–1

  • Violet FC2 — goes through
  • Russet FC1

Decided in extra time

90 minutes 1–1; extra time 1–0

  • Lime FC0(3)
  • Coral FC0(4) — goes through

Decided on penalties 3–4

90 minutes 0–0; extra time 0–0

Reading each result

  1. Topaz FC 2–1 Maroon FC. Decided in 90 minutes; nothing more to read.
  2. Violet FC 2–1 Russet FC after extra time. It was 1–1 after 90 minutes; extra time ended 1–0. A list that only shows the final score hides that the match was level at 90 minutes.
  3. Lime FC 0–0 Coral FC, 3–4 on penalties. The match itself ended level; the shoot-out only decides who goes through. In this invented cup's records the match counts as a draw.

Other competitions

Other formats are possible, such as going straight to penalties after 90 minutes or replaying a drawn tie. A competition's own regulations say which steps it uses; these pages use the invented cup's rule only.
